Passiflora edulis (Family: Passifloraceae) is commonly known as yellow passion fruit. Previous studies have reported that P. edulis has anti-inflammatory, anti anxiety, antihypertensive, cholesterol and lipid lowering, antioxidant, anti-tumour and antifungal activity. The present study was designed to evaluate analgesic activity of n-butanol extract of Passiflora edulis var. flavicarpa leaves (BEPEL) and fruit peels (BEPEFP) in animal models using tail immersion test, formalin test and eye wipe test. In tail immersion test, BEPEL at a dose of 150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg, i.p. has shown significant increase in reaction time at 60, 90 and 120 min. intervals (P <0.001). In formalin test, BEPEL in the doses of 150 and 300 mg/ kg, i.p. significantly suppressed both early as well as late phases of pain. In eye wipe test, BEPEL in the dose of 150 and 300 mg/ kg, i.p. significantly reduced number of eye wipe compared to control group. Thus, the result of present investigation confirms the analgesic activity of BEPEL. However BEPEFP did not show any significant effect on pain in the three models used which indicates that BEPEFP is devoid of analgesic activity.
